Electric Bicycles: "E-Bikes"
Technology changes in recent years has seen the introduction of a variety of small, battery powered vehicles. A number of provinces have amended their legislation to allow these vehicles to be used on sidewalks and public roads. On October 3,2006, Ontario introduced a three-year pilot project to permit electric bikes (e-bikes) to be used anywhere normal bicycles are allowed, as controlled by municipal by-laws. The legal minimum age requirement is 16 years, with a mandate for each rider to wear an approved bicycle helmet. The purpose of this project is to determine how the final legislation for e-bikes will be implemented for on-road use. Further details about e-bikes and this project can be found at:

In response to the demand from the marketplace to provide a solution for our customers and in keeping with the direction of the Insurance Industry, effective immediately, some of Hallmark¡¯s insurers will ¡°read in¡± coverage for e-bikes for personal property and liability to our Homeowners, Condominium and Tenant policy forms at no additional charge. Liability will only be covered when used in compliance with local by-laws and restrictions.

Currently these policies provide coverage for mobility assistive devices for physically disabled persons. Examples of such devices include motorized wheelchairs and wheelchair scooters. Please note that coverage will not extend to any gas powered vehicles or any electric vehicles that can be plated for the road.

This change will be for both common-law and civil code policy wordings and will be written in as part of our next wording version.
